Breeding
Twin Peaks Alpacas owns a share in Hemingway's El Bello, a proven Studmaster herd sire whose cria  have exemplary  crimp and confirmation. El Bello will be at Twin Peaks Alpacas the months of July and August each year. Clients can bring their females for breeding to this exceptional herd sire.  We also offer a Mobile Breeding program.

Reproduction

The female is generally introduced to the male alpaca from 12 months of age although in America it can be as late as 18 months. A healthy fertile mother potentially can produce one cria (baby) per year up until the age of 15 to 16 years. Gestation is 11.5 months or 335 days and can be longer for a maiden. Abortion can be a problem especially where the animal is suffering from any form of stress. Multiple births are extremely rare.  Matings are generally in a controlled environment so that accurate records can be maintained.

The Hembra (female) is placed in a separate pen with the macho(male). If the female sits, she is ready for mating. A female that spits and kicks and tries to run away is generally either pregnant or not ready for mating. A typical mating can take from 20 to 40 minutes. Alpacas are induced ovulators and are capable of conceiving at any time although most matings are arranged during the spring and summer periods to avoid winter births. The orgling of the male during mating induces ovulation.

Seven days after the initial mating, the male is reintroduced to the female. A female that spits and kicks and tries to run away is generally pregnant. At 60 days, the female is tested for pregnancy through the use of ultrasound. The process of introducing a male to a female to test for pregnancy is known as the spit off test and can be repeated at various stages throughout the pregnancy. Blood tests are sometimes undertaken to test for increased hormones.

There have been some initial trials on embryo transplants in Australia and artificial insemination has so far been unsuccessful.

Alpacas normally give birth during the daylight hours and the cria should be standing within two hours of the birth. Many breeders place a cover over the young cria for the first few days especially during periods of uncertain weather.
